Description

1845-D Quarter Eagle, MS61
Just Outside the Condition Census

1845-D $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Variety 6-J. The 1845-D is moderately rare. The original mintage was 19,460 pieces with an estimated 200-250 pieces believed extant today in all grades. However, this picture of availability changes dramatically at the Mint State level. In Doug Winter's 2013 edition on the series, an MS61 coin lies just outside the Condition Census. This is an unusually attractive and well-produced piece. Rather than the usual bagmarked piece with subdued luster, this example has bright, vibrant surfaces that are noticeably clean and display semiprooflike fields. Central strike details are a tad soft, as usual. This is a high-grade Dahlonega gold piece for the advanced date/mintmark or type collector. Population: 5 in 61, 4 finer (9/16).
