Description

1851-O Quarter Eagle, MS62
Scarce in Mint Condition

1851-O $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1. Of the two varieties known for the 1851-O, this one is most easily distinguished by wide repunching at the bottom in the date. Here it is only faintly seen as a lunule below the 5, but almost all the base of the final 1 is apparent. For a branch mint quarter eagle, the mintage was considerable with 148,000 pieces produced. However, far fewer are known than one might imagine. Only 200-250 pieces are believed extant, and only a tiny fraction of those survive in Mint State like this coin. The surfaces display bright yellow-gold mint frost over each side. The centers show high-point softness, more apparent on the reverse. Remarkably clean surfaces overall. Population: 6 in 62, 4 finer (9/16).
