Description

1924-S Double Eagle, MS64
Prohibitively Rare Any Finer

1924-S $20 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1924-S is nearly identical to the 1924-D in terms of the number of coins struck (2.9 million) and the number of survivors believed extant (1,100). Researcher Roger Burdette explains that "all but approximately 250,000 1924-S double eagles were melted -- a huge waste of time, resources, and money." The quarter million coins that were released were sent to Federal Reserve Banks for export, though only 500 or so pieces have been traced to European sources. Most examples fall within the MS62 to MS63 grade range. Near-Gems will give any dedicated collector a run for his or her money, and anything finer will prove prohibitive. Although strike definition is typical for the issue, this piece enjoys eye-appealing orange-gold surfaces awash in radiant frost. It will surely hold a place of importance in any high-end set. Only five submissions at PCGS are finer. CAC: 20 in 64, 1 finer (9/16).
