Description

1801 Ten Dollar, BD-2, AU55
Early Die State, No Spines in Cap

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, AU55 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, unclashed and unlapped. This BD-2 representative is in the scarce early die state before the spines of unknown origin appear within Liberty's cap. The variety as a whole is readily available and popular for type purposes, but this Choice AU representative is somewhat finer than is typically encountered. The screw press strike is even, sharp, and well-centered. Deep orange-gold and lilac hues appear in the protected regions of the fields amid otherwise olive-gold patina. The protected fields around the peripheral legends exhibit semiprooflike mirroring when tilted beneath a light. This 1801 eagle has smooth surfaces, and eye appeal is abundant.
From The Twelve Oaks Collection.
