1866/1866 Rays Shield Nickel, MS63
FS-302, Repunched Date

1866/1866 5C Rays, Repunched Date, FS-302, MS63 PCGS. FS-302 is one of the most dramatic doubled date varieties of the 1866 Shield nickel; an entire secondary date is seen in the spaces to the right of the primary digits. A couple of stars on the reverse are also recut. This popular variety is scarce in high grade and highly sought-after. The strike is a trifle soft on high points of the wreath and shield and on several stars, but abrasions are minimal for the grade. Frosty luster shows light golden toning. The obverse is heavily lapped, and the reverse exhibits peripheral die cracks.
