1798/97 Draped Bust Dime
Attractive MS64

JR-1, 16 Stars Reverse

1798/97 10C 16 Stars Reverse, JR-1, R.3, MS64 PCGS. The diecutter obliged with several defining characteristics for this near-Gem early dime, most notably 16 field stars squeezed into the field above the eagle's head. The reverse die was utilized for 1797-dated quarter eagles as well. The overdate is clearly visible with a Small 8 punched high over the Large 7 underdigit, leaving the long tail of the 7 in plain sight . Stars 3 and 4 nearly meet point-to-point, as do stars 6 and 7.

As usual, die clashing is visible on both sides although not as heavy as sometimes seen. The obverse stars sharp except for three or four with partial incompleteness. Aquamarine and bluish-gray toning deepens at the margins on both sides of this softly lustrous, visually pleasing example. Few abrasions are seen anywhere on the frosty surfaces, although there are some Mint-related adjustment marks across the shield. Population (for the variety): 7 in 64, 5 finer (11/16).
