Description

1874 Trade Dollar, PR66
None Finer at PCGS

1874 T$1 PR66 PCGS. CAC. In its second year of issue, 700 proof Trade dollars were struck. By year-end, a small inventory remained and as Bowers (1993) explains, "... on January 9, 1875, 175 unsold Proofs were released for face value and, presumably, went to coin dealers." Although not a rare issue in absolute terms, this high-end piece represents a rare opportunity for the advanced collector to acquire one of the finest examples at PCGS. This is an expectedly razor-sharp Premium Gem proof with superior eye appeal. When examined at the proper angle, each side displays violet-toned centers that turn to cobalt- and ice-blue with glimpses of lemon-yellow at the rims. Two small breaks in the toning occur over the eagle's head and left wing (facing). A few minor, undistracting wispy marks appear throughout. Population: 4 in 66, 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 66, 0 finer (11/16).
