High-End Large Date Example

1843-O $2 1/2 Large Date, Plain 4 MS64 NGC. Variety 1. The Large Date 1843-O quarter eagle is by far the scarcer of the two date size varieties for this issue, and this is particularly notable in Mint State. Doug Winter (2006) estimates that only 75 to 85 Large Date coins exist in all grades. If accurate, the certified population figures are highly inflated. Either way, Mint State examples are genuinely rare. The present coin is the sole finest Large Date example at NGC, although another MS64 coin is reported by that service but not designated as to Large or Small Date. By contrast, NGC reports three Small date coins in Choice condition and two finer representatives (10/16). The coin here offered displays hints of mint-green throughout original, frosty yellow-gold surfaces. Scattered field marks limit the grade but pose little distraction. The eagle's left (facing) leg shows the only mentionable strike weakness. The mintmark is repunched on this die marriage.
