Description
1871 Gold Dollar, MS68
Tied for the Finest Graded
Unforgettable Rich, Colorful Patina
1871 G$1 MS68 PCGS. The mintage of just 3,930 pieces
suggests the 1871 gold dollar is rare in an absolute senses, but in
the astounding MS68 grade the extreme rarity is guaranteed. While
the Akers/Duckor specimen is generally regarded as the finest of
the fine, this outstanding example is, if possible, equally
impressive. Both coins are similarly immersed in vibrant and
colorful patination that separate them from the other Superb Gems
that exist. The present coin displays dazzling mint luster over its rich, orange-gold surfaces. Reddish-gold overtones deepen the intense coloration. The 1871 is often weakly struck at the centers, but this example is double-sharp -- both the hair above the forehead and the word DOLLAR on the reverse are fully defined. The fields are largely prooflike, suggesting an early strike. Eye appeal is off the charts. Population: 3 in 68, 0 finer (1/17).(Registry values: N1)
