Description

1855 Gold Three Dollar, MS65
Condition Census Rarity

1855 $3 MS65 PCGS. With a mintage of 50,555 pieces, the 1855 three dollar gold is among the more plentiful issues in the series in Mint State. Examples can be found with little difficulty through MS63, and Choice coins are occasionally obtainable. The same cannot be said of Gems. In MS65, NGC has seen only a single coin -- the present example -- and that service lists one Premium Gem finer; PCGS records three MS65s and another MS66 (1/17). The only finer MS66 PCGS coin is from the Pogue Collection, and it realized $35,250 in the D. Brent Pogue Collection, Part III (Stack's/Bowers, 2/2016), lot 3092. This MS65 representative is beautifully preserved and boldly struck, showing rich original luster in peach and orange-gold hues. Luster just shimmers in the fields when rotated beneath a light.(Registry values: N7079)
