Description

1801 Ten Dollar, AU50
BD-2, Rare Perfect Die State

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The rare early die state without a row of vertical die lines embedded in Liberty's cap. The die state is omitted from the standard Bass-Dannreuther reference. The usually seen die lines on the cap were caused by damage to the obverse die, similar to the 1804 "Spiked Chin" half cent. The present piece was struck before that damage occurred. This Heraldic Eagle ten dollar gold piece shows minimal friction on the curls, cap, and bust truncation. Luster emerges the protected areas, the strike is crisp, and abrasions are confined to a few light hair-thin marks on the upper right obverse field.
