Description
1758 Oswego Captured Medal
Betts-415, Silver, XF45
Betts-415. 1758 Oswego Captured. Silver. XF45 PCGS. Oswego
was the only French victory in North America that received mention
on a medal; indeed, the war soon became a rather prickly situation
for the undersupplied and undermanned French armies in North
America. In August 1756, Montcalm and the French had the upper
hand, and the destruction of Britain's Fort Oswego netted them not
over 1000 prisoners, but tons of materiel, artillery, and plunder
for their native allies. The French did not hold the present-day
Oswego, New York location long, but this medal marks the slim
moment in time when their forces controlled the conflict. Possibly
cleaned at one time, now with lovely gray-gold toning over the
pleasing silver surfaces exhibiting only trivial circulation marks.
30.8 mm, 11.3 grams. (Est. $3,000-$5,000).
