Description

1855-D Half Eagle, Orange-Gold AU53
Medium D Mintmark

1855-D $5 Medium D AU53 PCGS. Although the holder notes that this is an example of the Large D variety, it is actually the scarcer Medium D mintmark, attributed by the distance between the fletching and the upper right serif. The stars, wing feathers, olive leaves, and claws are strongly detailed. Rich orange-gold hues dominate lightly abraded surfaces. The 1855-D is an elusive Dahlonega product with an estimated 125 to 150 pieces extant. Survivors are rarely seen finer.(Registry values: P4)
