Description

1880 Half Eagle, CAC-Approved MS66
Unseen in Higher Grades

1880 $5 MS66 PCGS. CAC. The PCGS CoinFacts plate coin. David Akers once wrote, "The 1880 is common in all grades and is readily obtainable even in Choice Uncirculated condition." While it is true that Choice representatives are obtainable, Gems are exceedingly rare. Premium Gems like the one offered here are of the utmost rarity. The PCGS Population Report shows four MS66 submissions, while the NGC Census lists two more in that grade. CAC has approved two examples at his unsurpassed level (2/17). We last offered a PCGS example in MS66 as part of our 2015 New York Signature Sale. That coin, lot 3528, realized $10,575 without CAC approval.

Shimmering rose-gold surfaces radiate vibrant frost. Greenish elements appear on each side, adding to the eye appeal and confirming the originality of this marvelous Registry-grade half eagle. The devices are sharply struck with inconsequential softness on the central curls and the eagle's talons. An alloy spot below the I in UNITED will identify the coin in future appearances.(Registry values: P2)
