Description

1807 Capped Bust Half, AU55
Blundered Denomination, O-112

1807 50C Capped Bust, Large Stars, 50 Over 20, O-112, R.1, AU55 PCGS. Mint engravers were prone to errors when punching the denomination into the working dies just as they were when entering the dates into the dies. A large workload and, in the case of John Reich and Robert Scot, failing eyesight may have contributed to the blunders. Similar denomination errors are seen on 1822 and 1828 quarters, and on the 1818 half eagles. On Overton-112, a 2 was mistakenly punched instead of a 5 (or is it an upside-down 5?), then partially effaced and the correct numeral entered. This colorfully toned About Uncirculated example displays Choice surfaces and much remaining mint luster. The coin is sharply defined and minimally marked throughout. Population: 45 in 55, 67 finer (3/17).
