Description

1874 Copper Trade Dollar
Judd-1363, PR64 Red and Brown
Extremely Rare

1874 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1363, Pollock-1508, R.8, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Like many off-metal strikes, this 1874 Trade dollar was struck from regular dies, but in copper and with a reeded edge. According to USPatterns.com, there are only four copper pieces known plus two in aluminum. One of the copper pieces is now a part of the Mitchelson Collection in the Connecticut State Library, so if Saul's census is correct that leaves only three pieces available to collectors. The surfaces on this example have mellowed considerably, but still retain bright mint red surrounding the devices. A number of tiny carbon flecks are seen over each side. The strike is intricately detailed.
