Boldly Repunched Mintmark

1846-D/D $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 17-J. Two major varieties of 1846-D half eagle are known: a normal mintmark variant, and the presently widely repunched mintmark. The secondary D is entered too far north, imbedded in the branch stem and fletchings. This example is boldly detailed with hints of luster in the fields. Attractive olive-gold patina blankets each side. Population: 13 in 58, 15 finer (3/17).(Registry values: P3)
