Description

1847 Liberty Five, MS64
Conditional Rarity
Only Two Finer at PCGS

1847 $5 MS64 PCGS. There are a few dates in the No Motto series of Liberty half eagles that are more plentiful than all the others. Among those is the 1847 with the highest mintage of any issue for the type. There were 915,981 half eagles coined in Philadelphia that year, an impressive production for any pre-Gold Rush issue. Despite that substantial mintage, high grade pieces are extremely rare as the PCGS population illustrates. The hair strands, star centers, and feathers are all boldly defined, save for the eagle's neck that shows slight weakness. The surfaces are brilliant yellow with full frosty mint luster. A highly appealing example for a date or type collector. Population: 4 in 64, 2 finer (3/17).(Registry values: P5)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TL, PCGS# 8231, Greysheet# 8893)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
