Description
1853/4 Arrows and Rays Quarter, MS64
Condition Census Example
1853/4 25C Arrows and Rays MS64 PCGS. This enigmatic
overdate shows a mistaken final-digit punch from the next year
rather than the previous year. The die state of the present coin
shows the upper portion of the 4 within the top of the 3 and also
plainly displays the repunching above the right arrow shaft. Only
24 pieces have been certified in Mint condition by both of the
major grading services combined. At the MS64 level, this coin is
tied with just four others at PCGS with a single Gem finer (4/17).
This is a lovely coin that has the usual strong mint luster one
would expect on an 1853 quarter. The lustrous finish serves to
backlight gray-olive surfaces that have a strong contrast of
charcoal-gray over the devices. Sharply struck and seemingly
defect-free.Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2016), lot 3742.(Registry values: P6)
