Description
1858-S Gold Dollar, MS63
Underrated Issue in Mint State
1858-S G$1 MS63 PCGS. From a mintage of 10,000 pieces, the
1858-S gold dollar is a major rarity in Mint State grades, and the
issue is definitely underrated when compared to the more popular
emissions from the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints. Few examples were
saved by contemporary collectors, as collecting branch mint issues
was not popular before Augustus Heaton published his landmark
treatise on mintmarks in 1893. The typical survivor grades no
better than VF-XF and probably no more than 12-18 examples are
extant in Mint State grades. The present coin is an attractive Select specimen, with sharply detailed design elements and pleasing orange-gold surfaces that show only scattered, minor signs of contact. Satiny mint luster is present throughout, but slightly dimmed on the obverse. Population: 2 in 63, 2 finer (4/17).(Registry values: N4719)
