Description

1856-O Liberty Eagle, AU58
Only One Numerically Finer Coin at PCGS

1856-O $10 AU58 PCGS. The 1856-O Liberty eagle claims a mintage of 14,500 pieces, certainly a small total in absolute terms, but not unusually small for a New Orleans issue of this time frame. After the San Francisco Mint opened in 1854, most of the gold from the California fields that had previously been shipped to New Orleans for coinage was sent to the closer San Francisco facility instead, making gold production at the New Orleans Mint much smaller than in earlier years. The 1856-O is rare at the AU58 grade level, and finer examples are very rare.

The present coin is an attractive near-Mint specimen, with just a trace of wear on the well-detailed design elements. There is a die crack through the T in UNITED and evidence of die rust shows around the letters in LIBERTY. The lustrous orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and overall eye appeal is strong. Population: 7 in 58 (1 in 58+), 1 finer (4/17).(Registry values: N2998)
