Description
1863 Postage Currency Ten Cents in Aluminum
Judd-328, PR64+ Cameo
1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-328, Pollock-398, Cassel-67, High R.7,
PR64+ Cameo PCGS. The obverse features the usual heraldic
shield with arrows, surrounded by an inverted laurel wreath, with
the inscription EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES around. The reverse shows
the denomination 10 CENTS in two lines above the date, with the
inscriptions POSTAGE CURRENCY and ACT JULY 1862 around. Struck in
aluminum with a reeded edge. Various aluminum and copper
compositions have been found and some pieces weigh 8 grains while
others weigh 11 grains. Recent versions of Judd have simply divided
the aluminum pieces into reeded and plain edge versions. This is an
exceptionally bright aluminum piece with deeply mirrored fields and
heavily frosted devices. Die cracks and planchet irregularities are
