Description

1873 Two Cent Piece, PR66+ Red and Brown
Closed 3, None Finer at PCGS

1873 2C Closed 3 PR66+ Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. The Guide Book mintage of 600 pieces includes two varieties of the 1873 proof-only issue -- the Closed 3 proofs, which are considered originals, as well as proofs with an Open 3 logotype, which allegedly are restrikes. (It is possible that the Open 3 coins were struck in 1873 as well.) This sparkling, Plus-graded Red and Brown Premium Gem displays CAC endorsement and radiates eye appeal. A speckling of brick-red patina overlays reflective copper-orange fields and recesses on the obverse, while peach-gold and ruby-red shades occupy the reverse. The strike is impressively sharp, while the surfaces are free of any perceptible carbon. Population: 32 in 66 (2 in 66+) Red and Brown, 0 finer. CAC: 19 in 66, 0 finer (6/17).(Registry values: N2998)
