The Previously Known Broken Glass Cent

1942 1C Experimental Amber Glass Cent, Judd-2069, RB 42-70, R.7 -- Broken -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. Impact Strength Test. Struck with the third reverse of the experimental design according to Roger W. Burdette in United States Pattern & Experimental Pieces of WW-II. When we offered an unbroken example of this variety in our January 2017 FUN sale, we wrote that just two were known, one complete and the other broken. This important piece illustrates the finished product, the 1942 experimental cent as it would look if the glass cents had been chosen to replace the bronze composition during World War II.

This is the broken example that PCGS has labeled as an "Impact Strength Test" piece, but our consignor notes that "Tensile Strength Test" is more accurate. Burdette notes that the testing was not done at the National Bureau of Standards as there are no control numbers, leading us to conclude that internal tests were conducted within the Blue Ridge Glass Corporation facilities in Kingsport, Tennessee.

This piece, housed within a "Cointain" in its PCGS holder, exhibits the same amber color as the unbroken example from our January sale. The edge is smooth and finished, as on the other example, and that characteristic differentiates this piece from those to follow. The cracked and crazed surfaces are consistent with the unbroken piece, and match the Blue Ridge Glass Corporation report of December 8, 1942. This piece should be viewed in person as photography is extremely difficult due to its transparency. The image of each side picks up the details of the other side, including not only the design, but all of the pock marks, crazing, and cracking that is consistent with its manufacture.
