Description

1886 Liberty Nickel, MS66
Sought-After Key, Registry Grade

1886 5C MS66 PCGS. From a small mintage of 3.3 million pieces, the 1886 Liberty nickel is generally considered the second-rarest issue of the series, just behind its 1885-dated counterpart. However, the 1886 seems to be even rarer than the 1885 in high grade. Contemporary collectors preferred to update their collections of Philadelphia Mint coins by purchasing proof examples every year, so few high-quality business strikes were saved.

The present coin is a delightful Premium Gem, with well-detailed design elements that show a touch of the usual softness on some star centers and the lower wreath. The well-preserved surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster, with a few hints of pale gold toning. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 10 in 66 (2 in 66+), 0 finer (7/17).(Registry values: N2998)
