Description

1858-D Gold Dollar, AU58
Low-Mintage Type Three Issue

1858-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 10-M. The 1858-D gold dollar is a curious issue. Only 3,477 pieces were struck, and yet quite a few examples are known in high grades. With only 125-150 pieces believed extant in all grades, it is not exactly a type coin, but it is one of the few D-mint Type Three gold dollars that can be located in AU and even mint condition. It is also much better struck than the preceding 1857-D. Slight softness is noted on the high points of this coin, and each side displays rich yellow-orange color. A few shallow field marks are noted on the reverse, but we only see one on the obverse.
