Description

1908 Quarter, Multicolor PR68
Ex: John C. Hugon Collection

1908 25C PR68 ★ NGC. Ex: Hugon. Concentric bands of orange-gold, powder-blue, and apple-green dominate the obverse. The reverse border shows golden-brown and aquamarine at the margin though the frosty eagle and nearby glassy field are untoned. A prize for the connoisseur of patinated silver proofs, this Star-Designated 1908 Barber quarter is tied for the finest non-Cameo proofs known. It is mainly the toning that keeps this piece from a Cameo designation, as the silvery central reverse shows moderate contrast between the eagle and the field. The strike is full throughout. Census: 1 in 68 , none finer with a Star designation, 1 finer as PR69 Cameo (11/12).
