1870-S Half Eagle, AU53
Scarce in All Grades
1870-S $5 AU53 PCGS. The 1870-S half eagle is scarce in all
grades -- most estimates agree that fewer than 100 pieces are
likely extant; none are reported in Mint State. The 17,000-coin
mintage circulated extensively, and today AU coins are rare and
represent the finest pieces available. This coin is well-detailed
with glimpses of prooflike reflectivity in the protected regions of
the fields. Original orange-gold surfaces yield hints of deeper
rose in the recesses. A few scattered marks are consistent with the
