Description

1801 Eagle, BD-2, AU50
Well-Detailed Type Coin

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The 1801 BD-2 is the most plentiful of early eagles produced from 1797 to 1804. Star 8 has two points oriented toward Liberty's cap, and the eagle's beak nearly touches star 13 at its top. The two lowest left stars on the obverse are softly struck on this piece. This example shows still-lustrous canary-gold centers that deepen to amber-gold near the peripheries. A bit of highpoint rub is visible as a color change on the cheek and elevated strands of the hair, and a bit of light field chatter is consistent with the grade. A small dig is noted at the I in LIBERTY. An excellent choice for a type coin.
