1797 $10 Large Eagle, BD-4, High R.4, XF45 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/a. This is the rare early die state that shows the reverse uncracked at the R and C in AMERICA. Other examples of this die state appeared in the Bass Collection and are housed in the ANS. This is the final die marriage of the 1797-dated coins and is the forth reverse type used with the common obverse. The eagle's neck is tall and wide, with a star positioned under the beak. Only about 90 to 110 examples of this variety are believed extant.

The present example is remarkably sharp for the grade, showing light wear mainly on the central hair curls of Liberty's portrait. The eagle is well-detailed. Original straw-gold surfaces are satiny and lightly marked on the obverse but distinctly prooflike on the reverse. Housed in a green label holder.
