Description

1886 Liberty Nickel Key Date, MS66
Among the Finest Known
Conditionally Rare

1886 5C MS66 PCGS. Between the two major keys in the Liberty nickel series, the 1885 receives the most publicity, but the 1886 is the rarer coin in high grade. In our experience auctioning each issue in Premium Gem condition, the '86 is about four times rarer in this top grade than the earlier date. We have handled an MS66 coin on only nine previous occasions, mostly within the last decade as Registry Sets have boomed during this period, promoting active trading of high-end coins. With no Superb Gems known, this 1886 Liberty nickel is among the finest examples available for Registry Sets. Both sides are brilliant and radiantly lustrous without abrasion. Liberty's portrait is sharp, and the corn ear to the left of the wreath bow shows partial definition; nonetheless, many peripheral stars are weak. Population: 11 in 66 (3 in 66+), 0 finer (10/17).(Registry values: N2998)
