1872 Two Cent, MS66 Red
Among the Finest Certified

1872 2C MS66 Red PCGS. CAC. The Civil War era brought about a number of unusual denominations and methods of paying for goods and services, including encased postage stamps, fractional currency notes, paper scrip (known today as obsolete notes) and tokens. The federal two cent coins were introduced in 1864, with the three cent nickel coins debuting the next year, closely followed by the nickel five cent piece in 1866.

As the new denominations were issued, the two cent pieces dwindled in popularity. The initial production figure for the denomination was in excess of 19 million pieces, but annual mintages would only decline from this point forward. Although the series officially ended in 1873, production of business strikes ceased in 1872, with a mintage of only 65,000 coins. Survivors of this final-year issue are among the most sought-after of the series, especially in full Red grades.

Bright orange-red surfaces along with strong luster are attributes of this Premium Gem example. In addition, the strike is sharp. A few wispy die cracks are present, and an as-made lint mark appears on the leaf near 3 o'clock on the obverse. Minor scattered carbon does not pose a distraction.

An exceptional coin with strong visual appeal, this piece is tied with only two others as the finest surviving example and is housed in a first generation holder. PCGS has awarded the MS66 Red grade to three examples, with none so-graded at NGC. Neither service has awarded a higher grade to a single piece (1/18), and this is the only CAC-designated MS66 Red.
