1885 Liberty Nickel, MS67
Tied for Finest at PCGS

1885 5C MS67 PCGS. A surprisingly small mintage of 1.4 million Liberty nickels was accomplished in 1885 and few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors at the time of issue. Most collectors of that era preferred to update their collections every year by ordering proof sets from the Philadelphia Mint and proofs are actually more common than high-grade business strikes in today's market. Among business-strike issues, the 1885 is clearly the most challenging issue of the series in high grade, even outdistancing the lower mintage 1912-S.

The present coin is a spectacular Superb Gem, with impeccably preserved surfaces that radiate vibrant, frosty mint luster from both sides. The design elements are sharply detailed throughout, even on the usual troublesome spots on the lower wreath. Struck from a late state of the dies, both sides of this coin show an extensive network of die cracks through the peripheral elements. The break above the E in AMERICA is especially interesting. Pleasing shades of pale gold and lavender toning enhance the terrific eye appeal. Population: 4 in 67, 0 finer (12/17).(Registry values: N4719)
