Description

1823 Half Dollar, MS63+
O-110a, Ugly 3 Variety
In the Condition Census

1823 50C Ugly 3, O-110a, R.3, MS63+ PCGS. An effort by a die sinker to strengthen the 3 in the date malformed the numeral into what is called the "Ugly 3" on Overton-110a. This late die state variety also shows a circular die crack around the eagle on the reverse. An MS65, MS64, and several MS63s are at the top of Steve Herrman's Condition Census. Prior pedigree of the present Plus-graded coin is unknown. Both sides show russet and gold toning with subtle mint-green undertones visible with a loupe. A few minor abrasions prevent a finer grade but are unobtrusive. The central devices are well-struck, although some left-hand border stars are incomplete.
