Description

1843-C Quarter Eagle, XF45
Scarce Small Date, Crosslet 4 Variant

1843-C $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1. Die State III. A strong obverse die crack runs from the rim to the bust tip at 7 o'clock, with a die bulge surrounding the lower portrait that represents a late die stage. The Small Date with its Crosslet 4 is much scarcer than the 1843-C Large Date, which has a Plain 4. This Choice XF example shows brief wear with orange accents at the rims and on some of the raised elements, surrounded by lightly abraded fields. A few tiny tiny marks exist on the chin and cheek. Attractive greenish-gold color retains hints of mint luster. Population: 8 in 45, 28 finer (12/17).
