Description

1857-O Liberty Quarter Eagle, MS63
Tied for Finest at PCGS

1857-O $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. Variety 1. The 1857-O was the final Liberty quarter eagle struck at the New Orleans Mint, an important consideration for branch mint type collectors. The 1857-O is not as difficult to locate in high grade as its mintage of 34,000 pieces would suggest, perhaps because some high-quality examples surfaced in a hoard discovered in Jackson, Tennessee in the early 1980s. Most of those coins graded XF40-MS62. However, the 1857-O remains a rare issue at the MS63 grade level.

The present coin is an impressive Select specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show a touch of the usual softness on the eagle's left (facing) leg. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly marked and radiate satiny mint luster on both sides. Population: 5 in 63, 0 finer (12/17).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25JE, PCGS# 7784, Greysheet# 8383)
