Description

1840-C Half Eagle, AU53
Highly Elusive Charlotte Five

1840-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 2. Although a bit softly struck in the centers, as always for the scarce 1840-C half eagle, this About Uncirculated example is sharply defined in other areas with only minor abrasions that interrupt smooth and attractive surfaces. Traces of semiprooflike flash remain around raised elements while rich, greenish-gold color adds eye appeal. Doug Winter estimates between 125 to 150 pieces known, most of which are in XF or lesser grades. Population: 12 in 53, 28 finer (12/17).
