1908 Indian Head Five, PR65
Attractive Matte Proof Type Coin

1908 $5 PR65 PCGS. The year 1908 marked the beginning of the Indian Head design type, the first major design change on that denomination since 1839. The Mint Director's Annual Report for the fiscal year 1908, stated:

"The designs for the five dollar and the two and one-half dollar gold pieces were prepared by [an] American sculptor, Mr. Bela L. Pratt, of Boston. The striking characteristic of these coins is that they are executed in intaglio, or, more strictly speaking, 'incused,' an innovation that is unique in coinage. It was adopted upon the suggestion of Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow, of Boston, to the President as a plan of coinage to get the best results in artistic work and at the same time preserve for commercial interests the uniformity of the stacking of the pieces."

The new design, issued in the unique sunken relief format, encouraged the Mint to make another change to normal coinage practices: altering the finish of proof coins from polished fields to a sandblast texturing similar to that employed on some art and award medals. Thus, the 1908 matte proof Indian half eagle is a first of American coinage in many ways and today is sought-after both as a type coin and as an intriguing element of early 20th century Mint experimentation.

The Gem example offered here is sharp and free of bothersome marks. The original olive-gold surfaces yield delicate orange-gold undertones that are most attractive. Population: 19 in 65, 18 finer (1/18).
