Description

1801 BD-2 Eagle, AU53
Tines in Liberty's Cap

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, AU53 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, with no clashing or cracking visible. The vertical spines in Liberty's cap are not clash marks but are from some other form of damage to the die. Heritage numismatist Mark Borckardt has suggested that the damage may have been caused by a small set screw that fell onto the die at one point during the operation of the press. The surfaces of this coin are bright straw-gold and retain a fair amount of the original semiprooflike finish in the fields. Some deeper reddish patina is seen in the protected areas. BD-2 is a plentiful variety among early gold issues and represents most of the 1801 eagles seen, ideal for type purposes.
