Bar Kokhba Year 1 SelaBar Kokhba Revolt (132 - 135 AD). AR sela (26mm, 13.88 gm, 12h). First year (132/133 AD). Paleo-Hebrew Jerusalem on three sides of facade of the Jerusalem Temple, the holy ark seen from end in center of entrance / Paleo-Hebrew Year one of the redemption of Israel; lulav with etrog at left. Mildenberg 124, 3.17 (these dies). Hendin 1373. TJC 218. AJC 264.1. Very rare. Reverse a bit weakly struck, otherwise Extremely Fine.
All silver selas of Bar Kokhba Year 1 are very rare, with perhaps fewer than 20 known altogether. Prior to Heritage's Shoshana I sale in March of 2012, it had been eight years since a Year 1 sela had been offered in auction. The six Year 1 selas in the Shoshana Collection sold for between $28,000 and $89,000 including commission. This specimen, while exhibiting some roughness on the reverse, has an outstanding obverse depicting the facade of the Great Temple in Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the Romans nearly 65 years before the Bar Kokhba Revolt commenced.
