Description:
Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (18.5mm, 3.81 gm, 6h). Spain, Tarraco, 18 BC. S · P · Q · R · PARENT - CONS · SVO, toga picta over tunica palmata flanked on left by legionary aquila and on right by wreath / CAESARI above, AVGVSTO in exergue, triumphal quadriga advancing right, ornamented with one Victory and surmounted by a small galloping quadriga. RIC I 99. RSC 78b. BMCRE 399. Rare. Good Very Fine.

This unusual issue depicts consular ornamenta -- the garments worn by triumphing generals and the Consul, nominally head of the Roman State. These included the tunica palmata, a tunic embroidered with golden palmettes, and the toga picta, an elaborately embroidered purple toga.
