Rare 1905-O Micro O Barber Dime, MS63 PCGS1905-O 10C Micro O MS63 PCGS. Breen 3545, "Microscopic O." Howard Rounds Newcomb was one of the pioneer students of minute die varieties among late 19th and early 20th century coinages. He is credited with discovering the first "overmintmark," the 1900-O/CC Dollar. David Lawrence speculates this variety results from an employee using the mintmark punch designated for use on Quarters.
This is one of the finest extant examples. Both sides are deeply toned with sea-green and rose hues overall. Well defined for an O-mint issue, a couple of minor contact marks are seen on each side. Breen lists this smaller-than-normal mintmark variety as "Rare." PCGS population: 2 in 63, 2 finer (12/05), none are comparable at NGC although 3 are finer.(Registry values: P5) (PCGS# 94836)
