Description

Significant Choice BU 1897-O Barber Half Dollar

1897-O 50C MS64 PCGS. One of the lower mintage issues in the Barber Half Dollar series, the 1897-O was produced to the extent of just 632,000 coins. The vast majority of survivors are well worn, with Poor, Fair, AG, and Good being the most prevalent grades. An understandably important near-Gem, this coin displays a softly frosted sheen with light, mottled, champagne-gray overtones. The reverse impression is a little soft in areas, as one might expect for an O-mint Barber coin, but the surfaces do not reveal any abrasions that would seem to rule out an MS65 grade. A significant find for the advanced Barber Half Dollar specialist, and worthy of a premium quality bid. Population: 11 in 64, 13 finer (7/02).
From the Ohio Collection. (NGC ID# 24LZ, PCGS# 6478)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
