Description:
Dazzling 1866 Shield Nickel, Judd-489
1866 Five-Cents, Judd-489, Pollock-577, R.6, PR 66 PCGS. A Shield nickel variant but the motto is in much smaller letters and the date is divided by the ball at the base of the shield. The reverse has a Dutch 5 in the center that is surrounded by a laurel wreath and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the margin. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Bright and white, and actually more resembling aluminum than nickel. Very light flyspecking on each side. This pattern comes in thin and thick planchet sizes, and while it is difficult to say for sure inside a holder, this appears to be the thin planchet variety. (PCGS# 60489)
