1870 50C J-943
Very Scarce 1872 Five-Cent Die Trial, Judd-1189, Probably Ex: Farouk1872 Five-Cents, Judd-1189, Pollock-1329, R.7, PR 65 Red and Brown, PCGS. Regular die trials piece for the Shield nickel. Struck in copper with a plain edge. All the five-cent die trials are exceedingly scarce. Only three die trials are in the Harper Family Collection from the 1870s, a testimony to the rarity of such pieces in a collection as comprehensive as this one. Pollock only lists two examples of this die trial, which brings up the question if this should be considered an R.8 rather than an R.7. This piece is most likely from the Farouk Collection. This splendid example has bright reddish-orange surfaces for the most part with slight mellowing over each side. (PCGS# 61189)
