Description:
MS67 1913-S Type Two Buffalo
One of Two at PCGS
1913-S 5C Type Two MS67 PCGS Secure. The 1913-S Type Two Buffalo nickel is the key to the six 1913-PDS issues, and the bourse floors at coin shows are rife with lower-grade examples, often with problem surfaces, at marked-up prices. Interestingly, the grade-price curve is not as steep as many other less-rare issues, so that lower-grade Mint State coins may be purchased for a reasonable multiple over, say, a nice Very Good example. That is undoubtedly due to the existence of many survivors clustered around the Choice and Gem Mint State grade levels at NGC and PCGS. Above Gem, however, the 1913-S Type Two turns into a rare bird indeed, seldom sighted. PCGS has seen 28 submissions in MS66, with one in MS66+.
At the Superb Gem level of the present piece, prices skyrocket as the populations plummet. PCGS has certified only two at this level with none finer (9/12). This appears to be the first time we have ever offered an MS67 PCGS example; the MS66+ PCGS piece referred to above, also with CAC approval, brought $27,600 in our Chicago Signature (Heritage, 8/2011), lot 3434. The present coin is easily found at PCGS' CoinFacts site, the Superb Gem given the largest photo. Bright, glowing mint frost appears over surfaces that are virtually untoned. As expected, no discernible marks appear on either side. The strike is bold if just short of full, showing slight softness above the braid knot and atop the bison's head. A marvelous example for a fine Registry Set.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 22R3, PCGS# 3923)
