Description

Important AU50 1916 Doubled Die Nickel
Boldly Doubled Date

1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse AU50 NGC. FS-101. Lightly worn over both sides with muted gray surfaces showing accents of reddish-tan color. The rehubbing on this variety is strong and clearly visible, even without a glass; the 9 and 6 are especially pronounced. It is so clearly evident that it is difficult to imagine why this variety remained undiscovered until 1962. The Doubled Die 1916 nickel is perhaps the "first among peers" for the major Buffalo nickel die varieties. It is elusive in all grades -- complicated by the wear-prone nature of the date area -- and virtually unobtainable in AU and Mint State. Census: 5 in 50, 36 finer (1/12).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2TSS, PCGS# 3931)

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
