Description:
Outstanding Choice AU 1916/16 Buffalo Nickel
1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse AU55 PCGS. Pronounced re-hubbing is seen on the obverse, most conspicuously in the area of the date which is widely doubled. Curiously, this major striking error was not discovered until 1962. Since that time very few examples have turned up in any grade, and high grade coins are especially difficult to locate. Only 10-12 coins are believed known today in Uncirculated condition with perhaps twice that many in the various grades of AU. This is an especially choice coin that retains good portions of mint luster and light, streaky golden-olive toning over each side. One cannot fault the lack of highpoint detail on the highpoints as no 1916/16 nickels are known with complete definition. Otherwise, the surfaces are virtually fault-free with no mentionable abrasions on either side. This is a very important opportunity for the Buffalo nickel specialist to acquire what is very likely the rarest coin of the 20th century that is generally included as part of a regular U.S. series. (#3931) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2TSS, PCGS# 3931)
