Lustrous 1916 Doubled Die Buffalo Nickel Rarity1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse AU58 NGC. This is a classic twentieth-century rarity, a coin that always creates a buzz in the room when it crosses the auction block. The 1916 Doubled Die nickel is a relatively recent discovery, unknown to collectors until the last few decades. This variety was first published in the July 1962 issue of The Numismatic Scrapbook magazine, with the variety not gaining widespread popularity until a decade later. In 1978, the 1916 Doubled Die nickel made its first appearance in the Guide Book, forever popularizing the variety among a much larger segment of the hobby. For any variety, inclusion in the annual "Redbook" is most important, as this reference serves as a kind of checklist for so many collectors. Today, with its additional inclusion on the PCGS and NGC Set Registry programs, demand has reached extremely high levels.
The highly important doubling of the date and other obverse details are boldly visible, providing a highly desirable and collectible example of this variety. The surfaces are exceptional for the grade, with delightful gold toning and iridescent hairlines. A few faint imperfections are noted. The doubling of the date is very clear and dramatic; the kind of doubling necessary for the "big bucks." We anticipate that this specimen will find an appreciative home in the next owner's cabinet, where it will undoubtedly be seen as one of the highlights of the Buffalo nickel section.
