Coveted VF 1916 Doubled Die Obverse Nickel1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse VF25 PCGS. FS-016. The key date to the Buffalo Nickel series, the 1916 Doubled Die is tougher than the 1918/7-D, and is much tougher than the famous 1937-D Three Legged Nickel. Despite 35 points of wear, the widely separated secondary date is obvious to the southeast. Although the pick-up point is the date, die doubling is also noticeable on the feathers and profile. Lilac-gray in color with glimpses of russet freckles and a few streaks of olive-brown toning. Wear is even, and no marks distract, particularly when the grade is considered. Perfect for the collector who seeks a collectible but nicely detailed middle grade example. Population: 8 in 25, 65 finer (10/05).
